Main Street Books has lived in the old general store on Main Street in Davidson, NC since 1987 when Barbara Freund & Betty Reinke established the area's most esteemed independent bookstore. After 27 years of expertly putting books in the hands of bibliophiles all around town, Betty & Barbara retired in 2015. Adah Fitzgerald now carries the torch as proprietor of Main Street Books,. In early 2016, the bookstore got a facelift - Adah repaired & painted the antique bookcases, polished the original wood floors, refreshed the layout, and created a comfortable sitting area for quiet reading and events..
Our mission is to build a community of readers. We strive to feed the imaginations of our readership with books that behave as windows and mirrors. We also invite readers and writers into conversation with readings, signing, book club, writing club, and story time. At our core, Main Street Books is a group of kindred spirits who share a love of story.
Adah Fitzgerald, Owner
Adah grew up eavesdropping on her mother's book club discussions and hiding in her closet to read after lights out. She's proud to be at the helm of a literary institution in a community with such avid and interesting readers.
Eleanor, Event Coordinator
Eleanor has taught English in Greece, guided kayaking tours in Maine, and enjoys recommending books by Sloane Crosley and Colum McCann. As Event Coordinator she brings our mission to life by hosting writers in our shop. As a talented writer in her own right, Eleanor pens our blog, Sense of Shelf, where she poses some of the very best questions in her interviews with visiting authors. Much (ok, most) of the dynamic programming we offer is Eleanor’s imagination and organizational skills at work!
Catherine grew up living all over the Western hemisphere and reading bilingually. She directed area literacy programs for ten years and continues that service to the community through ESL programming. At Main Street Books, Catherine juggles superb customer service with excellent book recommendations, especially for children.

Jennifer has built school libraries in North Carolina and abroad. She is an avid reader of adult and children's literature. Jennifer has raised her children to read the book before they see the movie and she's a fantastic gardener and quilter. Additionally, Jennifer is also founder and licensed professional counselor at Intentional Living Counseling & Coaching Services.
Have you seen the Hogwarts House banners that hang in our store? Lily is the bookseller and artist behind those magnificent pieces. Lily has been reading and recommending books at Main Street Books since 2015 and lends her hand to our chalk signs, totes, and tee shirts. When she is not shining her bright light at the bookstore, she is helping with her family needle crafting business, Hearts on Fiber.
Serena grew up in Davidson and now attends UNCC, where she is a student of music and gender studies. When she's not composing music and wow-ing crowds at the Summit Open Mic Night, she's devouring books from a diverse array of authors - from Jane Austen to Trevor Noah - and offering editorial input on her literary father's manuscripts.
Jessica loves, loves, loves to put the right book in a reader’s hands.
Anna joined our staff in 2016 and juggles student life as a Spartan at Pine Lake Prep with book slinging at Main Street Books.
